Obama Administration Eager to Step Up U.S. Aid to Israel to Record Highs
July 4, 2016
Congress received a message from Obama's cabinet last week calling for a provision of military aid to Israel larger than the U.S. has even donated to any country in its history.
In the letter to Congress, the director of the Office of Management and Budget along with national security advisor Susan Rice boasted that “Through word and deed, this administration has done more for Israel’s security than any other in U.S. history.” According to the letter, before the end of Obama's administration the White House would like to establish an increase in aid “that would constitute the largest pledge of military assistance to any country in U.S. history.”
The amount of additional aid to be provided remains undisclosed as secret negotiations between the two governments continue.
This potentially unprecedented level of donations to Israel is on the table even while the White House and Congress tie up a deal that will cut the minimum wage of entry-level workers in Puerto Rico from $7.25 to $4.25 an hour. It will also deny overtime pay guarantees for salaried workers. That bill was signed by Obama on June 30. These attacks on the rights of the working class are being justified in the name of "fiscal responsibility" even while the Obama administration loudly proclaims its determination to lavish its overabundance of funds on any and all projects that serve the aggressive war program of the U.S. monopoly capitalist class.
The state of Israel was originally set up under the patronage of British imperialism. Ever since, it has been a tool of western imperialism, today of U.S. imperialism, to dominate the region by means of, "a permanent foothold to maintain control in the Middle East."
U.S. aid to Israel means the denial of all rights to the Palestinian nation and the calculated expulsion of the Palestinian people from their homeland.
